Red Calaca Mobile Art Studio

A 24-foot burst of color rolls into the neighborhood, and suddenly the street becomes a classroom, canvas, and storytelling circle on wheels. The Red Calaca Mobile Art Studio is more than a truck—it’s Rosalia Torres-Weiner’s ARTivist heart in motion, bringing free, culturally rooted art education directly to underserved Latinx communities in Charlotte, NC.

Fueled by the City of Charlotte Project Support Grant, ASC Creative Renewal Fellowship, and Creative Growth Grant, the Art Truck transforms parking lots and schoolyards into creative sanctuaries where immigrant children and families feel seen, heard, and valued. Inside, 10 iPads glow with possibility as Rosalia guides participants through digital painting, animation, and storytelling using Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Fresco—empowerment tools, not just technology.

Outside, murals, short films, and hands-on activities invite elders and youth to preserve generational stories, document social realities, and speak openly about family separation and the immigrant experience. Every stop is an act of healing, resistance, and joy—proof that our stories matter, and art can travel wherever community needs it most.

How It Works

When the Red Calaca Mobile Art Studio arrives, it brings an instant festival of color, music, and welcome. Children, teens, and seniors step into a vibrant creative space to share memories and dreams through art. Rosalia leads free digital art and storytelling workshops using 10 iPads loaded with Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Fresco, so participants can paint, animate, and design their own visual narratives.

She weaves in traditional Latinx storytelling—oral histories, family memories, cultural symbols honoring roots and resilience. The truck delivers everything needed: art supplies, guidance, and a safe, loving environment where immigrant and Latinx communities process difficult experiences, celebrate identity, and transform lived stories into powerful art. Every workshop bridges generations, with elders and children creating side by side.

Impact & Recognition

Backed by the City of Charlotte Project Support Grant, ASC Creative Renewal Fellowship, and Creative Growth Grant, Red Calaca has expanded access to culturally relevant art education for overlooked Latinx communities. Rosalia’s artivist work—including stories born in and around the truck—has been featured at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum, affirming the national importance of these narratives. Through digital workshops, murals, and films, immigrant children and families find healing in telling stories of migration, separation, and resilience, preserving generational memory while amplifying unheard voices.

Support the Red Calaca Mobile Art Studio and keep these workshops free for immigrant children, families, and elders. Your donation fuels art supplies, digital tools, and storytelling sessions that uplift underserved Latinx communities—ensuring their stories continue to travel, heal, and inspire.
